Water

live

River stage and flow on the Mississippi main stem, captured at each source's own cadence and sealed as published.

How to read this page

An instrument read a value at a place and a time.

Measured at a fixed station. The record discloses which one and how far it is from you.

instrument

Published by an authoritative operator of the instrument.

What we cannot compare

Roughly 80 of our 102 stations have no registered vertical datum. Stage at those gauges is real and sealed, but comparing it to another station's stage returns INCOMPARABLE rather than a number. Corridor-wide comparability is not a thing we have yet, and we would rather say so than publish a difference that means nothing.

Sources

Every record names which of these served it, with the URL you can check yourself.

Where the answer is worth money

A tow grounds and the operator says the fall was unforeseeable. A flood claim turns on when the crest arrived. A force majeure clause turns on whether a reach was navigable.

That framing is our analysis of where disputes arise, not a claim of fact about any matter.

Coverage

The Mississippi main stem, end to end.

102 stations from Bemidji, Minnesota to Empire, Louisiana — ten states, the full main stem. This is where the method was proved, not the limit of what it covers.

Comparison returns INCOMPARABLE

A wave takes days to travel the corridor, so an upstream reading is a downstream forecast — which is why coverage end to end matters more than coverage near you.
